The end is here.

Witches Reign is now closed as a game with that final log. Use it for your goodbyes, your hellos, your ends and your beginnings.

Community membership has been opened, and these comms are yours to use if you want to keep adventuring in the world we've ended up in. Your characters have as much potential as you want to go where and when you want to see them, so if you need a sandbox, this one is yours.

Thank you all, so much, for making this game a delight to mod. We had an amazing time running it for you all, and we hope you had an amazing time playing here, for however long it was.

Signing off, for the last time.

Our final battle log is still ongoing! While the team with a shot at success has already been rolled by RNG, it isn't too late to tag into any of the initial threads for Balamb Garden's four-pronged assault on Esthar. Each thread, if it progresses far enough, will get a chance to influence the shape of our endgame.

However, in the interest of ending with the bang that Witches Reign deserves, we have an quick update: Though per our modding policy we will continue to tag threads back for as long as required, if the lab infiltration thread has not wrapped up in some form by Monday May 12th, the event conclusion will be narrated in a separate post. With that, the event and WR's overarching plot will officially come to a close. At that time, as previously announced, there will be an IC timeskip to the present day and one final farewell log for characters to navigate the aftermath.

We thank you all for bearing with us, and hope you've enjoyed the wild and wonderful ride as much as we have.

The team rolled to fight their way through Odine's lab and against Time Compression is Galbadia Garden!

Given our original announcement scheduled this selection for a week into the battle, we would like to apologize for the delay. We opted to wait a few extra days to see if the current threads would proceed to a point where entering the lab could be easily woven in; as they didn't, the lab thread is a separate thread from the initial entrances into Esthar.

Thank you all again for participating in this final plot with us. We have seen some creative tactics in the threads so far, and we hope they continue to the end.

The Assault on Esthar City has begun!

  • As with B3G, please remember that this is not a cakewalk. Characters should not be mowing down Estharian strikes or soldiers like Grats.
  • The ratio of passing time has changed so that now until the end of the battle (which we're aiming to wrap up by April) will be one IC day.
  • Besides whatever they brought on board, characters have all of their particular vehicle's resources at their disposal. Want to use Balamb's trucks or Galbadia's ice hockey equipment? Go for it.
  • Next Monday, we will RNG which team makes it to Odine's lab. The others will keep up the good fight!

For more information, see the original planning post. For questions, remarks, or planning, comment here!

We're approaching the final battle, not just against Esthar or a group of offworld-haters, but ultimately against the setting's truest and most implacable foe: Time Compression.

The secrets of Time Compression, according to Laguna, lie not within the laboratory set far on the outskirts of Esthar for study of that mysterious force; the data, devices and resources needed to control it have all been transferred to the infinitely more defensible private labs of Dr. Odine, deep in the heart of Esthar City. In other words, Garden alone has the entire might of Esthar to fight through.

This week has been and will be spent enacting Laguna's very... Laguna-ish plan, smashing up the OCS with the Gardens. Through some stroke of good fortune, all evidence will suggest that the plan is working as intended! Esthar forces will be spread out along the border, guarding workers as they attempt to repair the OCS and install Time Compression Cannons to ward Balamb Garden away. Meanwhile, the whole of Garden - SeeDs, Instructors, the few cadets who have not been withdrawn - is primed for action. Once the Gardens have done all the damage they can, Laguna will order the strike. These next few days are the last chance you have for personal threads outside of battle, so if you want to start them, start them now.

Next week, beginning Monday, the Assault on Esthar City begins, and four teams will mobilize separately to advance on Esthar City in the two airships and the two Gardens. From an OOC perspective, that means the ratio of passing time will change: Monday till the end of the battle will last only one IC day.

In preparation for this, we are asking everyone to divide into four teams, one for each vehicle in B-Garden's control: the Ragnarok, the Chaotix, Galbadia Garden, and Balamb Garden itself. These four teams will each receive a thread in the final battle log. Only one of them will have a chance at being successful; one OOC week into the battle, we will randomly select which team this is. The rest of the teams will have the honor of fighting the good fight, doing their best against impossible odds, and keeping themselves going as long as possible in their efforts... and so long as they put up a good fight, their efforts might not be in vain.

To sign up for a team, please comment to the relevant thread below. As ever, you may also use the rest of this post for questions, remarks and final plotting. Mod plotting questions may be directed here.

We will aim to have the final battle log wrapped up by April. After the battle is ended, there will be one final log for the game as it officially stands, and then... we will bid you, and it, a fond farewell. The communities will remain open as a musebox for you to play in, if you still so desire. Wherever you or your characters go, you will always have a home here.

    Playables

    This Week in Garden

  • Laguna's starting the week by crashing Balamb Garden into Esthar's cloaking shield. Form your teams and get ready as Garden goes back to pick up Galbadia Garden - both Gardens and both airships are heading in to Esthar City!
  • When Balamb Garden gets back to Balamb continent, a couple of ranchhands from the chocobo farm will be waiting to hand off their chocobos to cadets sponsored by Amber with a few quick instructions about how to ride them; apparently they are presents from their sponsor. Cadets sponsored by Lapis Lazuli will find a package for them left on the side of the road just by Balamb Garden's usual parking spot, containing an upgrade for their weapon "courtesy of your sponsor".
  • No school - we got a war going on!

    This Week in Garden

  • Breaks from a Train: Esthar has Time Compressed Fisherman's Horizon from a train mounted Time Compression cannon, with another friendly note to Balamb Garden to surrender.
  • Headmaster Cid is looking a bit cold this week: It looks like he's lost his signature sweatervests!

    Time Compression Chaos

Time Compression seems to be slowing down somewhat:
  • Continued from yesterday through Monday afternoon - Loopdeloop: There's been an electrical fault in one of the corridors leading to one of the biology classrooms, and the power is out. Efforts to restore it are hampered by the same corridor having become inconveniently endless: No matter how far you walk down it, when you turn around, you'll be back at the start.
  • Tuesday through Thursday - Mystery Dungeon: While the first floor has the same rooms it always has, they've been shuffled around. Following the same paths you always have will get you to a different room than you expect, and directions from someone else won't work for you either. Good luck finding your dorm room!
  • Friday - The Time in Time Compression: At 10AM, everything - people, the sun, items in use - snaps to where they'll be at 8PM. Everything except memories. Someone in their second class of the day might suddenly find themselves in the cafeteria having dinner. At 9PM everything snaps back to 11AM. When 8PM rolls around again, everything finds themselves where they should have been at 10AM, until 11AM happens again and time returns to normal.
Feel free to make up your own temporary localized TC effects! This event will be finishing on Friday.

    School

  • It is Week 5 of the trimester. LAN 101 is studying Old Shumi (Japanese equivalent) this term. The master schedule is up for CR and plotting purposes.
  • Besides the more combat and medically oriented classes, it's fairly easy to get out of class this week by claiming you're helping with the war effort.

    Weather

  • Monday: Low of 43F/6C, high of 61F/16C, rain
  • Tuesday: Low of 45F/7C, high of 64F/17C, cloudy

    This Week in Garden

  • As Balamb Garden prepares for war under the leadership of Garden Master Laguna Loire, the atmosphere is tense, and the news is only getting worse: Esthar has bombed Trabia Garden into Time Compressed oblivion, with an ominous call for Balamb Garden to surrender.
  • To the outcry of many a native, hotdogs are on lockdown as part of the war preparations "so that they won't fall into the hands of the enemy".

    Time Compression Chaos

With no regard for propriety, Time Compression continues to wreak havoc throughout the week.
  • Monday late night through Tuesday afternoon - We R Who We R: Not too long after curfew, the dolphin statues in the water around Garden's first floor begin to belt out an off-key medley of Estharian pop singer Ai%ha's greatest hits in reedy but piercing voices that carry through the entire building. They eventually segue into other songs and genres, including knockoff Disney songs, but remain completely oblivious to any attempts to shut them up until they fall silent again the following day.
  • Tuesday noon through Wednesday evening - Meat Mystery: Partway through an ordinary lunchtime (well, ordinary apart from the muffled sound of incessant singing drifting in from the lobby), the cafeteria and every non-living object in it vanishes without fanfare, leaving everybody on the grass outside staring at a hole in the wall. It reappears at some point after sunset the following day in exactly the same state it left in.
  • Thursday through Friday - Out of Service: The central elevator is behaving strangely - from the outside it seems to function as normal, but when you step out of its doors, you'll find you're not quite in the part of Garden you were expecting, and that the elevator isn't behind you any more.
  • Sunday through Monday afternoon - Loopdeloop: There's been an electrical fault in one of the corridors leading to one of the biology classrooms, and the power is out. Efforts to restore it are hampered by the same corridor having become inconveniently endless: No matter how far you walk down it, when you turn around, you'll be back at the start.
Feel free to keep on making up your own temporary localized TC effects too!

    This Week in Garden

  • The welcoming ceremony for the Garden Master will be delayed (hopefully just to tomorrow) and backdated to Monday. is up! Our apologies for the delay!
  • Word around the block is that the Garden Festival Committee is not providing any Valentine's events this year and couldn't get their act together enough to make a post about it. Those who know GFC members may hear that none of their usual suppliers wanted to supply a nation which is now at war, and nobody else would step up and be seen associating with Garden either.
  • In the weekend, Trabia Garden will be leaving Balamb continent to go and scout the outskirts of Esthar, confident that their firepower can deal with any opposition from the city.

    Time Compression Chaos

Along with the moving food and cutlery spotted around Garden, there will be some strange effects throughout Garden every day this week:
  • Monday early morning - Socks to Be You: One sock from everyone's favorite pair of socks has been eaten by a literal sock-eating monster. If your character walks around barefoot, the monster simply bites their toes and looks disappointed before scurrying away. Such cold!
  • Tuesday late morning - Next Gen Filter: All three Gardens' architecture, equipment, supplies (including food), and everyone's possessions (basically anything that isn't a character or monster should anyone bring them back to the training center) will be brown. This will not wash/scratch off, and anything brought into Garden during this time will also appear brown. So realism!
  • Wednesday lunch - Walls Down: All walls in the Gardens are invisible. Still solid if one touches them, but it sure looks like they aren't there. Many see through!
  • Thursday morning - Upside Down Mode: All furniture and personal possessions in the Gardens (anything that wasn't attached to the walls, floor, or ceilings) is now on the ceiling. Basically the gravity for inanimate objects now pulls them upwards rather than downwards, but remains as normal for characters and monsters. Much inaccess!
  • Friday afternoon - Seurat and Signac: Firearms are now paintball guns, right down to the ammo. Very colors!
  • Saturday evening - Back to the Start: Balamb and Galbadia Gardens look as they did when they were first built. Some rooms may not yet exist, and characters may find themselves standing on dirt instead of flooring, under the sky instead of roofing, or in the open air instead of behind walls. (Personal possessions and furniture will still be around, but the architecture of the Gardens will be under construction.) So history!
  • Sunday night - Disco Stick: All those lights that were just white or yellow before? They're now colored and in some cases flashing. Wow.
Feel free to keep on making up your own temporary localized TC effects too!

    School

  • It is Week 3 of the trimester. LAN 101 is studying Old Shumi (Japanese equivalent) this term. The master schedule is up for CR and plotting purposes.
  • With an understaffed Garden faculty struggling to keep Garden running amid administrative chaos and Time Compressed disarray, attendance-taking and disciplinary action in most classes this trimester has been unusually lax, with the exception of the more combat and medically oriented classes.

    Weather

  • Monday: Low of 48F/9C, high of 61F/16C, rain

    In the news

Laguna Loire, longstanding President of Esthar and vocal supporter of off-worlders, has suffered cardiac arrest, and his replacement has declared war on Balamb Garden...

    Time Compression Chaos

As well as bringing back characters, Time Compression is affecting the environment and people around the Gardens...
  • Environmental changes may range from very localized weather conditions to items or locations reverting to earlier states or moving around.
  • Characters may also have their memories and/or abilities altered, within the limits of your character's canon (and any applicable power nerfing).
  • All of these changes are temporary and shouldn't last more than a few hours at most.

    General

  • Balamb Garden is back on Balamb soil, and both Galbadia Garden and Trabia Garden are nearby. Feel free to use the other two Gardens as settings for your posts! G-Garden is deserted; T-Garden still has staff and students onboard, as well as helping out around Garden. (We have no link for T-Garden because its only appearance in canon is in pieces, but assume similar facilities to the other two Gardens.)
  • There is an open mingle log for returning characters!

    Mission: Repopulate the Training Center!

Following some idiot releasing all the monsters to fight Sol Invictus, Balamb Garden's training center is empty.
  • Any cadet or SeeD who brings at least two of a monster species back to the training center alive will be rewarded with the supplies needed to upgrade their weapon one level (but no higher than its third level).
  • This is an open mission intended as a prompt rather than a mission with closing signups; mods will not be NPCing monsters.

    Backdating and backtagging

  • Characters remaining from earlier are welcome to continue tagging the Battle of 3 Gardens: Phase 3.
  • There is a plotting thread for the last two backdated weeks of injury recovery, cleanup and repair work, and the first week of term. You may also backdate posts to this period, though reclaimed characters may not post to anything dated earlier than February 1st.

    School

  • Having handwavedly started term last week, classes are in Week 2 of the trimester.

Today marks the start of Time Compression Chaos. After emerging victorious against Sol Invictus, Balamb Garden has repaired the damage done in the battle, licked its wounds, informed the families of the casualties, and taken control of Galbadia Garden. Zabala remains out of commission, and the Training Center remains strangely deserted... but slowly, for the most part, normality has reasserted itself. A week later than scheduled, the new school term started -- to the remaining faculty, the battle had made it all too clear that the cadets need training if they are to face the threats brought to this world by Time Compression.

Because as of February, Time Compression isn't just going haywire in far-flung parts of the world any more. Balamb Garden is not immune to its effects, and soon -- though increasingly frequently as the month wears on -- characters may notice that parts of Garden itself are in flux. It may be subtle: midwinter frost materialising in a flash over a warm bench in the Quad, hot dogs vanishing from the cafeteria before anybody can buy them. But the problems will escalate: hiccups with disappearing or teleporting vehicles, equipment and machinery, entire recently-renovated classrooms reverting to a dusty, unpainted state and back, some of the newer dorms temporarily disappearing for hours at a time. What's more, the changes aren't even restricted to locations. People may find that their possessions get moved around or replaced or their memories or abilities fluctuate to other levels and times of their lives.

Sometimes Time Compression brings a few familiar faces -- perhaps you're one of them. Maybe you have some vague recollection of going home, or maybe it was just another day in your Time Compressed life, you took one step down the familiar hallway, and the scenery just changed. What's going on? No orientation is forthcoming from most of Garden's staff, who are adrift with the Commander out of action (wait, what do you mean they're not talking about Squall?). Some stranger may have taken over your dorm or your BBS ID if you decide to retreat there to gather clues. But chatting to anyone else will at least clue you in on one thing: this is all pretty messed up, and it's only going to get worse...

In other words, from now until the end of our final plot arc, previously-dropped characters may be brought back to the game. Formal reapps are not required, although we will be checking reclaims against previous apps.

    Some notes on logistics:
    • Essentially, every character that was accepted to WR between its inception on LJ and the beginning of endgame in 2014 is allowed.
    • The key word is Time Compression Chaos: multiple versions of characters, AU or OU, are not only welcome but hilarious! The one major exception is characters who have since gone on to be played as CRAUs in other games; in this case, we will ask you to retcon their memories to the point that they left WR.
    • Otherwise, memories remain intact. Whether your character went home prior to reappearing in Garden or was simply zapped into the present day is left to player discretion.
    • If you have changed your character's journal name or your own contact details since leaving the game, we additionally require a link to a thread on Dreamwidth that said character participated in, to verify your identity. (This should not exclude older characters, since all IC posts from the LiveJournal days were imported to [community profile] witchesreign and [community profile] concoursec during the move. If you can't find a thread in particular, let us know.)

If you wish to reclaim a character, respond to this thread (NOT outside it!) with the following copypasta. Multiple characters in the same comment are fine.

Once you've left a comment here, you're free to submit comm requests to [community profile] witchesreign, [community profile] concoursec and [community profile] concourseooc; we'll approve them as soon as we've matched your name to an old app. Feel free to also friend/fan the mod Plurk, [plurk.com profile] witchesreign, to keep up with announcements. There is now a mingle log to bring your characters into if you wish.

For characters remaining in game, feel free to play with Time Compression's effects on your characters! We ask that you keep these effects temporary and for memory/ability fluctuations, within the limits of your character's canon (and if applicable, any nerfing your character may have received for the game); any more permanent changes will need to be applied for as a canon update.

You may plot out any handwaved CR you would like to happen here or backdate it (reclaimed characters may not post to anything dated earlier than February 1st). For questions about anything in this post, please use this thread. If you have any other remarks about this phase of endgame, feel free to throw them out in the comments.

Today through the end of January, the event known as "B3G" will take place! Chronologically this event spans the 17th, but to give you all time the event will have three phases:

Friday the 17th: The beginning of B3G. Balamb Garden is intercepted by Galbadia Garden, and Sol Invictus launches an attack to take out the SeeDs, who are at this point the only force capable of opposing them!

NEW!! Friday the 24th: A surprise ally has entered the fray, and now Sol Invictus is swarming Balamb out of desperation! Characters have the opportunity to Draw GFs from their foes. Just remember, these enemies are worse than ever -- PCs ought to be struggling against them, especially without teamwork, good Junctions and skill use, and a little luck!

NEW!! Friday the 31st: Ien, leader of Sol Invictus, comes a hair's breath within killing Commander Zabala - this triggers her Limit Break, allowing her to kill all Sol Invictus members witnessing this battle! The Headmaster is returned to Garden, Garden is now leaderless, and there are still Sol Invictus members to fight...

The two most active phases will each have their own post, with threads dedicated to the most relevant locations in the fight. Because each is chronologically half a day, your characters aren't confined to one location -- they can move around, switch locations, tag freely, and generally do whatever makes the event most fun for you.

You may NPC Sol Invictus attackers freely in your threads. Do keep in mind, however, that SI members are, on average, an equal match for SeeDs, with access to supernatural powers and abilities of various sorts. Think of them as player characters who didn't join Garden, and you have about the right idea. They also have numerous offworld devices and the advantage of numbers. This is not an easy fight.

After the final phase, the passage of time from the 17th through the 1st will be handwaved, though how depends on how the event goes.

If you have any questions, please ask them below. Otherwise, happy B3G!

    End of year break

Balamb Garden remains on school break through January 19th. It also remains usually airborne, evading the Sol Invictus controlled Galbadia Garden. As a result, airsick cadets and staff can be often found throwing up over the side of Garden.

    SeeD field exam

Starfire's field exam off the coast of Galbadia is now live and backdated here!

    School

  • Year 4, Trimester 1 is scheduled to start next week. The master schedule for this is now live here for CR and plotting purposes.

    World news

This information can be picked up IC by various means. These could include but are not limited to newspapers and magazines (available in Balamb Town, by subscription, or in the library), word of mouth, NPC BBS posts, and a news ticker on the network (which also relays school news). • With Galbadia taken over by Sol Invictus, Dollet is offering emergency citizenship applications to the Galbadian flood refugees on Dollet soil to make them eligible for Dollet citizen aid rather than the more limited support available for other nations' refugees.
  • Conversely, Trabia's official response to the influx of refugees after the stricter border regulations imposed by Galbadia last year can be summarized as "neener neener." Even so, a number of sizeable camps have sprung up along the west coast.
  • Following the invasion, a few multinational corporations have decided to withdraw operations from Galbadia for the foreseeable future.
  • Meanwhile, Timber's economy is newly booming, and the interim town council is making some attempts to clear up the part of town that was submerged last year.

    Game

  • REMINDER: December activity check is closed. Please check in or post additional activity if you haven't already. (If you intend to drop a character, it is preferable you use the drop page, as AC idles are not cleared until Saturday.)
  • REMINDER 2: Witches Reign is going into end game, meaning reserves and applications are closed, weekly posts are going to become more plot focused, and activity check is becoming a player check in.
  • Finally, our apologies for this post being late!

    Playables

    End of year break

Balamb Garden is on school break through January 19th, but not a particularly relaxing one - Garden has mobilized following pursuit by the Sol Invictus-controlled Galbadia Garden, and will be landing only infrequently until further notice.

    SeeD field exam

Starfire's field exam, supervised by Namur (unless there are any other takers), will be posted at some point this month, projected for later in the week; we will link it here and Plurk it when that happens.

    School

  • Year 4, Trimester 1 is scheduled to start on January 20th. The master schedule for this is now live here for CR and plotting purposes.
  • Cadets sponsored by Ruby, Pearl, and Opal will receive smaller allowances than usual this trimester, Ruby and Pearl significantly so. Those sponsored by Carbuncle, however, receive larger allowances. Should affected cadets talk to administrative staff about it, they'll get only shrugs and responses along the lines of that being what the sponsors sent this term; Garden doesn't control it.

    World news

This information can be picked up IC by various means. These could include but are not limited to newspapers and magazines (available in Balamb Town, by subscription, or in the library), word of mouth, NPC BBS posts, and a news ticker on the network (which also relays school news). Feel free at any time to ask us for more details on any news items (this week's or previous weeks') if you'd like them for character discussions!
  • Despite the latest kerfuffle and Zabala's abovementioned response, Headmaster Cid remains out of office. Edea Kramer has also been difficult to contact this week, although people will have seen her around.
  • Timber has overthrown Galbadian rule and has set up a temporary town council chaired by the resistance group leaders. The remainder of the Galbadian forces posted in Timber have retreated to Winhill.
  • Speaking of Winhill, the murderous school desks have posted bail.
  • Speaking of Galbadia, Sol Invictus has officially declared their unilateral control of the capital (or at least what's left of it) as well as Galbadia Garden.

December's activity check is now over. We thank everyone who took the time to check in!

    Danger list
Sigyn Freyasdotter ([personal profile] fotlenke) - on activity probation

Drops will not be processed until Saturday January 11th to give room for error. (If you know you are dropping, we would prefer you use the drop page.)

If anyone was removed unjustly or was on hiatus, please let us know ASAP! We do make errors, unfortunately, and we also understand that there are outstanding circumstances which will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Also, those who simply forgot to check into AC or were asked for additional comments, please leave your links for activity here (not on the initial check in post).

With the game moving to player check ins rather than linked activity checks, probation is going to function differently from this point: Players on probation must reply to their next check in within the check in week rather than after the check closes and/or on these "end of check" posts. If you would like to take probation for a character, please comment here.

As of today, Witches Reign is entering endgame.

After several months of consideration, we have decided that the size, pace, and general activity of the game makes this decision the right one for the game. Now is the time to begin bringing our story to a close, while we still have the dedicated players and determination to see it through to what we hope will be an epic and satisfying conclusion.

In the short term, this means a few changes:
    1. Reserves and applications are closed at the present time -- but, see below.

    2. The weekly posts will be decreasing in size over time, but will become much more focused on the ongoing plot, so we advise you to pay attention.

    3. Ongoing plots will continue to receive backtags and the currently scheduled SeeD exam will proceed as normal.

    4. The mod team is down to Dragon, Caryl, and skarme, who expect no further changes until the end of the game.

    5. After December's AC, AC will be a check-in only. As we expect much of our activity will take place in plot logs, we don't want anyone to feel punished if they end up in a slower thread on said log, for example.

At present, we believe the game will be coming to end at the beginning or middle of April; we are including some leeway in the planning to make sure we get the plot out. Our timeline at present is as follows:

Mid-January to end: Plot event: "B3G", the final showdown with Sol Invictus.

February: Time Compression Chaos. During this period of time, we will open the communities back up to former characters only. We know many people out there have months if not years invested in the game; we would like to give them a chance to bid it farewell in style, if they so choose. No application is necessary so long as we can find you in our history.

March: The Fate of the World. The Final Confrontation. The End.

April: After a satisfactory resolution to the final plot, Witches Reign will be officially closed as a game. We will open the comms as a musebox, and we hope that the resolution will keep you interested in the setting and its aftermath.

On a personal note, we would like to thank all of you for playing with us, for the memories you have given us, and for the dedication that has seen us through for such a long time.
