    This Week in Garden

  • Laguna's starting the week by crashing Balamb Garden into Esthar's cloaking shield. Form your teams and get ready as Garden goes back to pick up Galbadia Garden - both Gardens and both airships are heading in to Esthar City!
  • When Balamb Garden gets back to Balamb continent, a couple of ranchhands from the chocobo farm will be waiting to hand off their chocobos to cadets sponsored by Amber with a few quick instructions about how to ride them; apparently they are presents from their sponsor. Cadets sponsored by Lapis Lazuli will find a package for them left on the side of the road just by Balamb Garden's usual parking spot, containing an upgrade for their weapon "courtesy of your sponsor".
  • No school - we got a war going on!

    This Week in Garden

  • Breaks from a Train: Esthar has Time Compressed Fisherman's Horizon from a train mounted Time Compression cannon, with another friendly note to Balamb Garden to surrender.
  • Headmaster Cid is looking a bit cold this week: It looks like he's lost his signature sweatervests!

    Time Compression Chaos

Time Compression seems to be slowing down somewhat:
  • Continued from yesterday through Monday afternoon - Loopdeloop: There's been an electrical fault in one of the corridors leading to one of the biology classrooms, and the power is out. Efforts to restore it are hampered by the same corridor having become inconveniently endless: No matter how far you walk down it, when you turn around, you'll be back at the start.
  • Tuesday through Thursday - Mystery Dungeon: While the first floor has the same rooms it always has, they've been shuffled around. Following the same paths you always have will get you to a different room than you expect, and directions from someone else won't work for you either. Good luck finding your dorm room!
  • Friday - The Time in Time Compression: At 10AM, everything - people, the sun, items in use - snaps to where they'll be at 8PM. Everything except memories. Someone in their second class of the day might suddenly find themselves in the cafeteria having dinner. At 9PM everything snaps back to 11AM. When 8PM rolls around again, everything finds themselves where they should have been at 10AM, until 11AM happens again and time returns to normal.
Feel free to make up your own temporary localized TC effects! This event will be finishing on Friday.

    School

  • It is Week 5 of the trimester. LAN 101 is studying Old Shumi (Japanese equivalent) this term. The master schedule is up for CR and plotting purposes.
  • Besides the more combat and medically oriented classes, it's fairly easy to get out of class this week by claiming you're helping with the war effort.

    Playables

    This Week in Garden

  • As Balamb Garden prepares for war under the leadership of Garden Master Laguna Loire, the atmosphere is tense, and the news is only getting worse: Esthar has bombed Trabia Garden into Time Compressed oblivion, with an ominous call for Balamb Garden to surrender.
  • To the outcry of many a native, hotdogs are on lockdown as part of the war preparations "so that they won't fall into the hands of the enemy".

    Time Compression Chaos

With no regard for propriety, Time Compression continues to wreak havoc throughout the week.
  • Monday late night through Tuesday afternoon - We R Who We R: Not too long after curfew, the dolphin statues in the water around Garden's first floor begin to belt out an off-key medley of Estharian pop singer Ai%ha's greatest hits in reedy but piercing voices that carry through the entire building. They eventually segue into other songs and genres, including knockoff Disney songs, but remain completely oblivious to any attempts to shut them up until they fall silent again the following day.
  • Tuesday noon through Wednesday evening - Meat Mystery: Partway through an ordinary lunchtime (well, ordinary apart from the muffled sound of incessant singing drifting in from the lobby), the cafeteria and every non-living object in it vanishes without fanfare, leaving everybody on the grass outside staring at a hole in the wall. It reappears at some point after sunset the following day in exactly the same state it left in.
  • Thursday through Friday - Out of Service: The central elevator is behaving strangely - from the outside it seems to function as normal, but when you step out of its doors, you'll find you're not quite in the part of Garden you were expecting, and that the elevator isn't behind you any more.
  • Sunday through Monday afternoon - Loopdeloop: There's been an electrical fault in one of the corridors leading to one of the biology classrooms, and the power is out. Efforts to restore it are hampered by the same corridor having become inconveniently endless: No matter how far you walk down it, when you turn around, you'll be back at the start.
Feel free to keep on making up your own temporary localized TC effects too!

    School

  • It is Week 4 of the trimester. LAN 101 is studying Old Shumi (Japanese equivalent) this term. The master schedule is up for CR and plotting purposes.

    This Week in Garden

  • The welcoming ceremony for the Garden Master will be delayed (hopefully just to tomorrow) and backdated to Monday. is up! Our apologies for the delay!
  • Word around the block is that the Garden Festival Committee is not providing any Valentine's events this year and couldn't get their act together enough to make a post about it. Those who know GFC members may hear that none of their usual suppliers wanted to supply a nation which is now at war, and nobody else would step up and be seen associating with Garden either.
  • In the weekend, Trabia Garden will be leaving Balamb continent to go and scout the outskirts of Esthar, confident that their firepower can deal with any opposition from the city.

    Time Compression Chaos

Along with the moving food and cutlery spotted around Garden, there will be some strange effects throughout Garden every day this week:
  • Monday early morning - Socks to Be You: One sock from everyone's favorite pair of socks has been eaten by a literal sock-eating monster. If your character walks around barefoot, the monster simply bites their toes and looks disappointed before scurrying away. Such cold!
  • Tuesday late morning - Next Gen Filter: All three Gardens' architecture, equipment, supplies (including food), and everyone's possessions (basically anything that isn't a character or monster should anyone bring them back to the training center) will be brown. This will not wash/scratch off, and anything brought into Garden during this time will also appear brown. So realism!
  • Wednesday lunch - Walls Down: All walls in the Gardens are invisible. Still solid if one touches them, but it sure looks like they aren't there. Many see through!
  • Thursday morning - Upside Down Mode: All furniture and personal possessions in the Gardens (anything that wasn't attached to the walls, floor, or ceilings) is now on the ceiling. Basically the gravity for inanimate objects now pulls them upwards rather than downwards, but remains as normal for characters and monsters. Much inaccess!
  • Friday afternoon - Seurat and Signac: Firearms are now paintball guns, right down to the ammo. Very colors!
  • Saturday evening - Back to the Start: Balamb and Galbadia Gardens look as they did when they were first built. Some rooms may not yet exist, and characters may find themselves standing on dirt instead of flooring, under the sky instead of roofing, or in the open air instead of behind walls. (Personal possessions and furniture will still be around, but the architecture of the Gardens will be under construction.) So history!
  • Sunday night - Disco Stick: All those lights that were just white or yellow before? They're now colored and in some cases flashing. Wow.
Feel free to keep on making up your own temporary localized TC effects too!

    School

  • It is Week 3 of the trimester. LAN 101 is studying Old Shumi (Japanese equivalent) this term. The master schedule is up for CR and plotting purposes.
  • With an understaffed Garden faculty struggling to keep Garden running amid administrative chaos and Time Compressed disarray, attendance-taking and disciplinary action in most classes this trimester has been unusually lax, with the exception of the more combat and medically oriented classes.

    Weather

  • Monday: Low of 48F/9C, high of 61F/16C, rain

    Playables

    In the news

Laguna Loire, longstanding President of Esthar and vocal supporter of off-worlders, has suffered cardiac arrest, and his replacement has declared war on Balamb Garden...

    Time Compression Chaos

As well as bringing back characters, Time Compression is affecting the environment and people around the Gardens...
  • Environmental changes may range from very localized weather conditions to items or locations reverting to earlier states or moving around.
  • Characters may also have their memories and/or abilities altered, within the limits of your character's canon (and any applicable power nerfing).
  • All of these changes are temporary and shouldn't last more than a few hours at most.

    General

  • Balamb Garden is back on Balamb soil, and both Galbadia Garden and Trabia Garden are nearby. Feel free to use the other two Gardens as settings for your posts! G-Garden is deserted; T-Garden still has staff and students onboard, as well as helping out around Garden. (We have no link for T-Garden because its only appearance in canon is in pieces, but assume similar facilities to the other two Gardens.)
  • There is an open mingle log for returning characters!

    Mission: Repopulate the Training Center!

Following some idiot releasing all the monsters to fight Sol Invictus, Balamb Garden's training center is empty.
  • Any cadet or SeeD who brings at least two of a monster species back to the training center alive will be rewarded with the supplies needed to upgrade their weapon one level (but no higher than its third level).
  • This is an open mission intended as a prompt rather than a mission with closing signups; mods will not be NPCing monsters.

    Backdating and backtagging

  • Characters remaining from earlier are welcome to continue tagging the Battle of 3 Gardens: Phase 3.
  • There is a plotting thread for the last two backdated weeks of injury recovery, cleanup and repair work, and the first week of term. You may also backdate posts to this period, though reclaimed characters may not post to anything dated earlier than February 1st.

    School

  • Having handwavedly started term last week, classes are in Week 2 of the trimester.

    End of year break

Balamb Garden remains on school break through January 19th. It also remains usually airborne, evading the Sol Invictus controlled Galbadia Garden. As a result, airsick cadets and staff can be often found throwing up over the side of Garden.

    SeeD field exam

Starfire's field exam off the coast of Galbadia is now live and backdated here!

    School

  • Year 4, Trimester 1 is scheduled to start next week. The master schedule for this is now live here for CR and plotting purposes.

    World news

This information can be picked up IC by various means. These could include but are not limited to newspapers and magazines (available in Balamb Town, by subscription, or in the library), word of mouth, NPC BBS posts, and a news ticker on the network (which also relays school news). Feel free at any time to ask us for more details on any news items (this week's or previous weeks') if you'd like them for character discussions!
  • With Galbadia taken over by Sol Invictus, Dollet is offering emergency citizenship applications to the Galbadian flood refugees on Dollet soil to make them eligible for Dollet citizen aid rather than the more limited support available for other nations' refugees.
  • Conversely, Trabia's official response to the influx of refugees after the stricter border regulations imposed by Galbadia last year can be summarized as "neener neener." Even so, a number of sizeable camps have sprung up along the west coast.
  • Following the invasion, a few multinational corporations have decided to withdraw operations from Galbadia for the foreseeable future.
  • Meanwhile, Timber's economy is newly booming, and the interim town council is making some attempts to clear up the part of town that was submerged last year.

  • REMINDER 2: Witches Reign is going into end game, meaning reserves and applications are closed, weekly posts are going to become more plot focused, and activity check is becoming a player check in.
  • Finally, our apologies for this post being late!

    Playables

    End of year break

Balamb Garden is on school break through January 19th, but not a particularly relaxing one - Garden has mobilized following pursuit by the Sol Invictus-controlled Galbadia Garden, and will be landing only infrequently until further notice.

    SeeD field exam

Starfire's field exam, supervised by Namur (unless there are any other takers), will be posted at some point this month, projected for later in the week; we will link it here and Plurk it when that happens.

    School

  • Year 4, Trimester 1 is scheduled to start on January 20th. The master schedule for this is now live here for CR and plotting purposes.
  • Cadets sponsored by Ruby, Pearl, and Opal will receive smaller allowances than usual this trimester, Ruby and Pearl significantly so. Those sponsored by Carbuncle, however, receive larger allowances. Should affected cadets talk to administrative staff about it, they'll get only shrugs and responses along the lines of that being what the sponsors sent this term; Garden doesn't control it.

  • Despite the latest kerfuffle and Zabala's abovementioned response, Headmaster Cid remains out of office. Edea Kramer has also been difficult to contact this week, although people will have seen her around.
  • Timber has overthrown Galbadian rule and has set up a temporary town council chaired by the resistance group leaders. The remainder of the Galbadian forces posted in Timber have retreated to Winhill.
  • Speaking of Winhill, the murderous school desks have posted bail.
  • Speaking of Galbadia, Sol Invictus has officially declared their unilateral control of the capital (or at least what's left of it) as well as Galbadia Garden.

  • Shit has hit the fan: Deling City has been submerged in a time compressed lake and subsequently blasted by a giant warhead with several Galbadia Garden staff and students within range. Witnesses at the Far East Station report an airship landing on Galbadia Garden.
  • Seizing on widespread panic among the Galbadian occupiers following the collapse of central command, a populist uprising in Timber has ousted several key political figures and, despite scattered military intervention, shows no sign of abating.
  • Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Trabia customs officials have caught people trying to smuggle chicobos in their hair over the border into Esthar. Though the country's climate does not naturally support chocobo forests, keeping chocobos as pets rather abruptly became a trend among the fashionable elite after last week, when reports of previously-imported chocobos fending off monsters on the city outskirts became a media sensation.
  • Headmaster Cid remains out of office.

SeeD field exam - SeeD supervisor signups

The final test for becoming a SeeD is a live mission! This will likely be posted at some point in the first two weeks of the new year.
  • While attempting to map out the newly-risen archipelago off the northeast coast of Galbadia, navigators came across a castle-like structure in the middle of the ocean, reporting loud drilling noises and disturbed wildlife in the area. Believing the structure to have originated off-world, an Esthar-based energy company with interests nearby has hired SeeD to decommission the rig, whatever its purpose may be, and to bring back as much of the equipment as possible for further research.
  • One SeeD is required to supervise and assess the cadet - and get the job done if they fail.
  • Sign up here!

    School

  • It's finals week! Good luck, cadets! SeeDs auditing classes are exempt.
  • The end of year break starts December 28th and runs through January 19th.

  • Headmaster Cid remains out of office. The current student buzz covers a whole ridiculous B-movie's worth of possibilities, but a lot of gossip this week also involves Douglas "Doug" Thomas, the Homecoming Prince candidate nobody but his brother cared about, reported missing in the aftermath of the Training Center breakdown and found outside Garden in his underpants nine days later. Given the Balamb Garden faculty's insistence that Cid Kramer's disappearance since last week is a poorly-timed but urgent confidential business trip and their unwillingness to disclose much else, rumors are also flying in political circles across the world...
  • The Timber farm that has allegedly played host to a continuous series of mysterious, disembodied noises for a few weeks now reports that the noises are becoming increasingly mechanical-sounding. There's still no word of an official investigation; Galbadia is tied up with both rebuilding from the tsunami and the uptick in low-level flooding around Deling City.
  • A new species of plant has been discovered growing between the cracks in a pavement in Dollet. While much of it has been relocated for further study, some plants have been liberated for use as a garnish by particularly creative chefs in some of the resorts.
  • In a historic trial, the school desks congesting the old streets of Winhill successfully plead not guilty to the charge of murder. They are sentenced to three months in jail as soon as anyone can find a good place to put them - D-District's been needing some new furniture.

    Garden

  • The Jurassic Garden event is finished IC. You may continue to thread in it, make your own backdated posts, or make current posts with the assumption that someone fixed the training center's monster containment field (please feel free to thread your character doing this!) and all monsters have been defeated or captured by the weekend. (Spoilers?)
  • Speaking of the mission to capture monsters alive, if anyone threads a monster capture, that monster will be added to the Training Center, and the captor will receive an increase in SeeD rank (if they're a Cadet, it will be added when they graduate).
  • Notice from Garden admin: The Headmaster is out of office. How unlike him... (See the world news section for more info.)

  • A strange building thought to be a theater has appeared in Fisherman's Horizon, flattening three houses. One person was injured by its sudden appearance. FH citizens have been as quick to help the newly homeless families as they have been to try and convert the theater's projection system for this world's film formats.
  • Bushfires in southern Esthar have been driving monsters normally found in the Abandan Plains and Minde Island into the Sollet Mountains, and as the week goes on, to the outskirts of the Esthar City area. Though the fires are not unusual for this time of year, this is the first year monsters have made it so far. World First blames off-worlder activity in southern Esthar.
  • Word around the block is that Cid hasn't been seen since last week's monster invasion... Theories range from "sweater vest shopping trip gone horribly wrong" to "vacation with Edea in their lovenest" to "time compressed into the future or another world" to "secretly a Shumi and finally evolved" to "part of the advance party invading Galbadia".

  • Clowns begin to roam Dollet, deliberately startling passersby and then chasing them. Though time compression is suspected, it turns out to be coordinated pranksters from the local university and young tsunami survivors blowing off steam.
  • As Trabia begins to chill, some Shumi have been spotted cutting the tree that pierced their dome some months ago and fixing the dome. A few Shumi have immigrated to the mainland, where townspeople have been surprised and wary but ultimately accepting.
  • There is a strange increase of leaking pipes, backed up sewers, and basement flooding in Deling City.

  • A Balamb animal welfare group has started relocating foreign chocobo from Balamb's new forest to the chocobo forests on Centra, reasoning that they can do less harm there. While they have the boats to do so, they need SeeD help to get them from the shores to the chocobo forests. (This is a SeeD ranks 6-10 mission free to be played and NPCed by anyone who wishes to play it out at any time, and has thus been added to the mission page.)
  • The wreckage of an enormous humanoid robot (albeit missing an arm) has crashed down in the sea around Fisherman's Horizon, with the head landing on and subsequently sinking part of the Galbadian side of Horizon Bridge. FH divers investigating the robot theorize that it is some sort of war machine. FH fishers have already decided that the parts, which are so large that they are not entirely underwater, are great for fishing off of.

  • The protest marches on Deling City a couple of weeks ago received a great deal of interest and global media attention, but so far the Galbadian government has promised only to "consider" the demands, which include considerable immigration reform and increased attention to relief efforts in the northeast.
  • Another territorial dispute has been building up steam with one company's announcement of their intention to buy out the theme park that recently sprang up around the Tomb of the Unknown King.
  • A push to green-light the culling of invasive foreign species of chocobo is steadily worming its way through Balamb.

  • Time Compression continues to run rampant. Reports have come in from all across the globe of mysterious or inscrutable places appearing, oftentimes directly in or around normal places or landmarks.
  • A movement which supporters call a political party and detractors label a cult has emerged in Esthar. This organization, named World First, openly argues that offworlders are responsible for the woes of Time Compression.
  • A Winhill farmer claims he was attacked by a giant chocobo made of pure light and breathing fire. No one else has seen this chocobo, but mysterious tracks that seem to belong to a bird of incredible size were found in the fields where he says he saw it.

  • There has been an uptick in chocobo maulings of livestock and townspeople across Balamb.
  • Following discontent over the government's foreign policy, immigration laws and handling of the recent tsunami, protesters from the world over expect to march en masse through Deling City on Friday.
  • A rather low-key report released this week states that fish and waterfowl around Lake Timber are dying off in alarming numbers, allowing plant life in the lake to proliferate out of control.

  • Bucket-shakers for the Galbadian tsunami relief efforts will be coming to Balamb Garden itself throughout the week in order to request aid.
  • All of the mysterious landmarks popping up in the area remain stubbornly present. To curb the various spooky rumors currently being passed around by many of the cadets, Garden faculty is currently discussing the possibility of an official investigation into the log cabin. • The political situation in Galbadia continues to dominate the media. Major protest marches on Deling City are planned for next week.
  • The flood of school desks in Winhill was joined last week by a junkyard full of weird cars, severely impeding the already anemic cleanup efforts. Transport in the region has ground to a halt, to the dismay of a small but vocal and growing number of locals who wish to abandon the town before the situation can worsen.
  • A number of previously unknown and unmapped remote islands are alleged to have appeared between northeast Galbadia (where the tsunami hit) and Trabia, though none of them have yet been officially confirmed.
  • Some scientists warn that the Timber area may be on the brink of ecological disaster following its partial submersion in a lake. This is not widely reported.

  • The GFC has set up a table in the Quad where characters may submit their (ICly private, OOCly screened) nominations for Homecoming Court.
  • While faculty remain divided over what to do about the cabin that appeared last week on the plains where Garden is usually parked, reports filter in of an unfamiliar chocobo forest appearing in the outskirts of Balamb Town, including some sightings of white and black chocobos not native to the region.

    School

  • In addition to the chocobo forest near Balamb, a tower emerges in the Vienne Mountains bordering Esthar. Whether or not the structure is inhabited is currently unclear.
  • Around Winhill, some roads are blocked due to estimated hundreds of identical folding school desks appearing in the streets, impacting tourism in the area. The public consensus is that it's probably a poorly-conceived publicity stunt, though by the end of the week nobody has stepped forward to take responsibility for it.
  • Despite mounting pressure from activists, including celebrities and prominent charities, Galbadia is officially doubling down on its strict immigration policies. Rumours of political deadlock abound.
  • North-east Galbadia remains a mess, with several population centres still lacking in basic amenities. Some voluntary organisations participating in the relief efforts have been severely set back by difficulties with funding, transport and supplies.
