The end is here.
Witches Reign is now closed as a game with that final log. Use it for your goodbyes, your hellos, your ends and your beginnings.
Community membership has been opened, and these comms are yours to use if you want to keep adventuring in the world we've ended up in. Your characters have as much potential as you want to go where and when you want to see them, so if you need a sandbox, this one is yours.
Thank you all, so much, for making this game a delight to mod. We had an amazing time running it for you all, and we hope you had an amazing time playing here, for however long it was.
Signing off, for the last time.

Our final battle log is still ongoing! While the team with a shot at success has already been rolled by RNG, it isn't too late to tag into any of the initial threads for Balamb Garden's four-pronged assault on Esthar. Each thread, if it progresses far enough, will get a chance to influence the shape of our endgame.
However, in the interest of ending with the bang that Witches Reign deserves, we have an quick update: Though per our modding policy we will continue to tag threads back for as long as required, if the lab infiltration thread has not wrapped up in some form by Monday May 12th, the event conclusion will be narrated in a separate post. With that, the event and WR's overarching plot will officially come to a close. At that time, as previously announced, there will be an IC timeskip to the present day and one final farewell log for characters to navigate the aftermath.
We thank you all for bearing with us, and hope you've enjoyed the wild and wonderful ride as much as we have.

The Random Number gods have chosen...
The team rolled to fight their way through Odine's lab and against Time Compression is Galbadia Garden!
Given our original announcement scheduled this selection for a week into the battle, we would like to apologize for the delay. We opted to wait a few extra days to see if the current threads would proceed to a point where entering the lab could be easily woven in; as they didn't, the lab thread is a separate thread from the initial entrances into Esthar.
Thank you all again for participating in this final plot with us. We have seen some creative tactics in the threads so far, and we hope they continue to the end.

The Assault on Esthar City
The Assault on Esthar City has begun!
As with B3G, please remember that this is not a cakewalk. Characters should not be mowing down Estharian strikes or soldiers like Grats.
The ratio of passing time has changed so that now until the end of the battle (which we're aiming to wrap up by April) will be one IC day.
Besides whatever they brought on board, characters have all of their particular vehicle's resources at their disposal. Want to use Balamb's trucks or Galbadia's ice hockey equipment? Go for it.
Next Monday, we will RNG which team makes it to Odine's lab. The others will keep up the good fight!

ENDGAME PART 3: The Fate of the World
We're approaching the final battle, not just against Esthar or a group of offworld-haters, but ultimately against the setting's truest and most implacable foe: Time Compression.
The secrets of Time Compression, according to Laguna, lie not within the laboratory set far on the outskirts of Esthar for study of that mysterious force; the data, devices and resources needed to control it have all been transferred to the infinitely more defensible private labs of Dr. Odine, deep in the heart of Esthar City. In other words, Garden alone has the entire might of Esthar to fight through.
This week has been and will be spent enacting Laguna's very... Laguna-ish plan, smashing up the OCS with the Gardens. Through some stroke of good fortune, all evidence will suggest that the plan is working as intended! Esthar forces will be spread out along the border, guarding workers as they attempt to repair the OCS and install Time Compression Cannons to ward Balamb Garden away. Meanwhile, the whole of Garden - SeeDs, Instructors, the few cadets who have not been withdrawn - is primed for action. Once the Gardens have done all the damage they can, Laguna will order the strike. These next few days are the last chance you have for personal threads outside of battle, so if you want to start them, start them now.
Next week, beginning Monday, the Assault on Esthar City begins, and four teams will mobilize separately to advance on Esthar City in the two airships and the two Gardens. From an OOC perspective, that means the ratio of passing time will change: Monday till the end of the battle will last only one IC day.
In preparation for this, we are asking everyone to divide into four teams, one for each vehicle in B-Garden's control: the Ragnarok, the Chaotix, Galbadia Garden, and Balamb Garden itself. These four teams will each receive a thread in the final battle log. Only one of them will have a chance at being successful; one OOC week into the battle, we will randomly select which team this is. The rest of the teams will have the honor of fighting the good fight, doing their best against impossible odds, and keeping themselves going as long as possible in their efforts... and so long as they put up a good fight, their efforts might not be in vain.
To sign up for a team, please comment to the relevant thread below. As ever, you may also use the rest of this post for questions, remarks and final plotting. Mod plotting questions may be directed here.
We will aim to have the final battle log wrapped up by April. After the battle is ended, there will be one final log for the game as it officially stands, and then... we will bid you, and it, a fond farewell. The communities will remain open as a musebox for you to play in, if you still so desire. Wherever you or your characters go, you will always have a home here.

ENDGAME PART 2: Time Compression Chaos
Today marks the start of Time Compression Chaos. After emerging victorious against Sol Invictus, Balamb Garden has repaired the damage done in the battle, licked its wounds, informed the families of the casualties, and taken control of Galbadia Garden. Zabala remains out of commission, and the Training Center remains strangely deserted... but slowly, for the most part, normality has reasserted itself. A week later than scheduled, the new school term started -- to the remaining faculty, the battle had made it all too clear that the cadets need training if they are to face the threats brought to this world by Time Compression.
Because as of February, Time Compression isn't just going haywire in far-flung parts of the world any more. Balamb Garden is not immune to its effects, and soon -- though increasingly frequently as the month wears on -- characters may notice that parts of Garden itself are in flux. It may be subtle: midwinter frost materialising in a flash over a warm bench in the Quad, hot dogs vanishing from the cafeteria before anybody can buy them. But the problems will escalate: hiccups with disappearing or teleporting vehicles, equipment and machinery, entire recently-renovated classrooms reverting to a dusty, unpainted state and back, some of the newer dorms temporarily disappearing for hours at a time. What's more, the changes aren't even restricted to locations. People may find that their possessions get moved around or replaced or their memories or abilities fluctuate to other levels and times of their lives.
Sometimes Time Compression brings a few familiar faces -- perhaps you're one of them. Maybe you have some vague recollection of going home, or maybe it was just another day in your Time Compressed life, you took one step down the familiar hallway, and the scenery just changed. What's going on? No orientation is forthcoming from most of Garden's staff, who are adrift with the Commander out of action (wait, what do you mean they're not talking about Squall?). Some stranger may have taken over your dorm or your BBS ID if you decide to retreat there to gather clues. But chatting to anyone else will at least clue you in on one thing: this is all pretty messed up, and it's only going to get worse...
In other words, from now until the end of our final plot arc, previously-dropped characters may be brought back to the game. Formal reapps are not required, although we will be checking reclaims against previous apps.
Some notes on logistics:
If you wish to reclaim a character, respond to this thread (NOT outside it!) with the following copypasta. Multiple characters in the same comment are fine.
Once you've left a comment here, you're free to submit comm requests to
witchesreign,
concoursec and
concourseooc; we'll approve them as soon as we've matched your name to an old app. Feel free to also friend/fan the mod Plurk,
witchesreign, to keep up with announcements. There is now a mingle log to bring your characters into if you wish.
For characters remaining in game, feel free to play with Time Compression's effects on your characters! We ask that you keep these effects temporary and for memory/ability fluctuations, within the limits of your character's canon (and if applicable, any nerfing your character may have received for the game); any more permanent changes will need to be applied for as a canon update.
You may plot out any handwaved CR you would like to happen here or backdate it (reclaimed characters may not post to anything dated earlier than February 1st). For questions about anything in this post, please use this thread. If you have any other remarks about this phase of endgame, feel free to throw them out in the comments.

Some notes on logistics:
- Essentially, every character that was accepted to WR between its inception on LJ and the beginning of endgame in 2014 is allowed.
- The key word is Time Compression Chaos: multiple versions of characters, AU or OU, are not only welcome but hilarious! The one major exception is characters who have since gone on to be played as CRAUs in other games; in this case, we will ask you to retcon their memories to the point that they left WR.
- Otherwise, memories remain intact. Whether your character went home prior to reappearing in Garden or was simply zapped into the present day is left to player discretion.
- If you have changed your character's journal name or your own contact details since leaving the game, we additionally require a link to a thread on Dreamwidth that said character participated in, to verify your identity. (This should not exclude older characters, since all IC posts from the LiveJournal days were imported to
witchesreign and
concoursec during the move. If you can't find a thread in particular, let us know.)

ENDGAME PART 1: The Battle of Three Gardens
Today through the end of January, the event known as "B3G" will take place! Chronologically this event spans the 17th, but to give you all time the event will have three phases:
Friday the 17th: The beginning of B3G. Balamb Garden is intercepted by Galbadia Garden, and Sol Invictus launches an attack to take out the SeeDs, who are at this point the only force capable of opposing them!
NEW!! Friday the 24th: A surprise ally has entered the fray, and now Sol Invictus is swarming Balamb out of desperation! Characters have the opportunity to Draw GFs from their foes. Just remember, these enemies are worse than ever -- PCs ought to be struggling against them, especially without teamwork, good Junctions and skill use, and a little luck!
NEW!! Friday the 31st: Ien, leader of Sol Invictus, comes a hair's breath within killing Commander Zabala - this triggers her Limit Break, allowing her to kill all Sol Invictus members witnessing this battle! The Headmaster is returned to Garden, Garden is now leaderless, and there are still Sol Invictus members to fight...
The two most active phases will each have their own post, with threads dedicated to the most relevant locations in the fight. Because each is chronologically half a day, your characters aren't confined to one location -- they can move around, switch locations, tag freely, and generally do whatever makes the event most fun for you.
You may NPC Sol Invictus attackers freely in your threads. Do keep in mind, however, that SI members are, on average, an equal match for SeeDs, with access to supernatural powers and abilities of various sorts. Think of them as player characters who didn't join Garden, and you have about the right idea. They also have numerous offworld devices and the advantage of numbers. This is not an easy fight.
After the final phase, the passage of time from the 17th through the 1st will be handwaved, though how depends on how the event goes.
If you have any questions, please ask them below. Otherwise, happy B3G!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
As of today, Witches Reign is entering endgame.
After several months of consideration, we have decided that the size, pace, and general activity of the game makes this decision the right one for the game. Now is the time to begin bringing our story to a close, while we still have the dedicated players and determination to see it through to what we hope will be an epic and satisfying conclusion.
In the short term, this means a few changes:
At present, we believe the game will be coming to end at the beginning or middle of April; we are including some leeway in the planning to make sure we get the plot out. Our timeline at present is as follows:
Mid-January to end: Plot event: "B3G", the final showdown with Sol Invictus.
February: Time Compression Chaos. During this period of time, we will open the communities back up to former characters only. We know many people out there have months if not years invested in the game; we would like to give them a chance to bid it farewell in style, if they so choose. No application is necessary so long as we can find you in our history.
March: The Fate of the World. The Final Confrontation. The End.
April: After a satisfactory resolution to the final plot, Witches Reign will be officially closed as a game. We will open the comms as a musebox, and we hope that the resolution will keep you interested in the setting and its aftermath.
On a personal note, we would like to thank all of you for playing with us, for the memories you have given us, and for the dedication that has seen us through for such a long time.

- Reserves and applications are closed at the present time -- but, see below.
- The weekly posts will be decreasing in size over time, but will become much more focused on the ongoing plot, so we advise you to pay attention.
- Ongoing plots will continue to receive backtags and the currently scheduled SeeD exam will proceed as normal.
- The mod team is down to Dragon, Caryl, and skarme, who expect no further changes until the end of the game.
- After December's AC, AC will be a check-in only. As we expect much of our activity will take place in plot logs, we don't want anyone to feel punished if they end up in a slower thread on said log, for example.
